On Saturday, April 21, at 8:30 AM, Water Street in Sag Harbor will be flooded with support for the 8th annual Katy’s Courage 5K.
The run, which commences on Water Street, benefits Katy’s Courage and Katy’s Kids @ CMEE (Children’s Museum of the East End) Center for Grieving Children.
Katy’s Courage is a not-for-profit foundation founded in 2012 by Brigid Collins and Jim Stewart to honor their daughter, Katy Stewart, a vibrant young girl who died of pediatric liver cancer at only 12 years of age. The money raised through annual events, such as the 5K, goes towards pediatric cancer research, local school scholarships, and Katy’s Kids, founded in 2015, a center for grieving children and their families, in Bridgehampton.
Rain or shine, competitive runners, walkers, and strollers alike will come out to run for a cause, alongside local East End organized teams such as MuvStrong, an East Hampton based training facility. Now in its second year, Elitefeats will provide a live results platform to measure the 5K course for those seeking competitive feedback on their performance.
“It’s really a great thing to witness the level of support we receive by our local community,” Collins, Katy’s Courage co-founder, explained.
A fun day for all, runners and families will enjoy a DJ, photo booth, t-shirts, coffee, and fresh fruit and bagels.
“Katy loved her East End community, and particularly her hometown of Sag Harbor,” Collins reminisced. “Once she was standing with us at the top of Sag Harbor Village in the area of grass between Madison and Main Street — she was four and really loved stories about princesses — and she looked out over the village, and she turned to us and asked, ‘Is this my Kingdom?’ She has always been our sweet princess, so we told her, ‘Katy, of course this is your kingdom.’ Now, each year, many people in her kingdom come out to support the work that honors her beautiful legacy.”
Those interested in donating but unable to partake in the race can enjoy a special shopping event on Saturday at Vineyard Vines in Southampton. Between 1 and 4 PM, shoppers will receive a 10 percent discount of their purchase and the store pledges to donate 10 percent back to Katy’s Courage.
