The SoFo Museum also invites nature lovers to join in “Flight of the Butterfly, Amazing Aerialists: Hands-on Workshop: for families and their children ages 10 and older. Don’t be fooled by the erratic bobbing and weaving you see when watching a butterfly flutter from flower to flower— butterflies are master flight manipulators. Their seemingly accidental movements have a very important purpose—to shake off predators. Unlike most insects, butterflies don’t fly with a constant body angle, they are continually rotating and tipping their body, even if they’re only travelling in one direction. Come learn how unique butterflies really are, how they fly, and why they fly the way they do. Afterward, get your very own rubberband-powered fluttering butterfly and see if you have what it takes to fly your butterfly to a flower to collect nectar. The material fee is $3. Advance reservations are required, for more information, reservations, and directions to meeting places, call 631- 537-9735.
