When: 03/01/2019, 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
The Montauk Observatory and Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences will sponsor “From Deep Sea to Space,” a free astronomy lecture by John Bouvier at the Southampton campus on March 1 from 7:30 to 9 PM.
Bouvier, a Southampton Town councilman, is a former NASA engineer. He formerly worked with both deep-sea diving and space exploration in the public and private sectors.
In his illustrated talk, Bouvier will discuss his work training astronauts and developing technologies in deep sea and space orbit exploration as well as his involvement in missions such as the recovery of Liberty Bell 7, which was the only U.S. spacecraft lost at sea.
Bouvier’s career has included working on the design and deployment of Deep Rover, which is a one-man submersible vehicle and Rig River, a tethered, remotely-operated robotic system for supporting and monitoring offshore oil drilling operations.
He also has worked as the general manager of the Oceaneering Space Systems, where lessons learned from underwater operations were applied to space operations.
