The Greenport and Southold Rotaries presented Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital May 15 with a $4000 check.

The clubs contribute a combined $3000 at the annual Laura Goodale Award Dinner to support the hospital. The award typically honors the dedication and exemplary service of a very deserving healthcare employee who embodies the legacy of Laura Goodale, a former Eastern Long Island Hospital nurse, who began working there in 1918, and whose 42-year service record as an “unforgettable nurse and caregiver” was so extraordinary it won her recognition as the “Florence Nightingale” of the North Fork.

Although this year’s celebratory dinner was canceled in response to the COVID-19, Greenport Rotary Club President Richard Wells and Southold Rotary Club President Kathleen Morris each collected an additional $500 to donate to the cause in honor and recognition of the current crisis.

“The Rotary clubs of Southold and Greenport are heroes in their own rite, and they hold a special place in our hospital’s history and our hearts,” Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital Chief Administrative Officer Paul J. Connor III said. “We thank them for their service to our community, and for their continued generous support of the Laura Goodale Award.”

The Laura Goodale Award was established in 1986 by lifelong hospital supporter Carl E. Vail Sr. in collaboration with the Rotary clubs of Southold and Greenport. Nursing administration has chosen to honor all of the hospital’s staff members this year for their selfless dedication to their essential roles during the novel coronavirus pandemic.

“This year, we honor all of our staff members with the Laura Goodale Award for their dedication and heroism,” Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer Patricia Pispisa said.
