Man struck in hit-and-run on West Main Street, police say

Pedestrian Fatality In Riverhead; Police Need Information




According to a statement from the Riverhead Town Police, they received numerous reports on Monday, December 2, that at approximately 5:06 PM, there was a motor vehicle accident in the area of 629 West Main Street (Route 25) in Riverhead, just west of Marcy Avenue.

Callers indicated that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle, and that CPR was being initiated by bystanders. Upon arrival, responding patrol units located a man lying in the roadway, with first aid being administered.

Riverhead Ambulance responded to the scene, treated the patient, and transported him to Peconic Bay Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The victim is a 72-year-old Riverhead resident whose name has not been released.

As of this writing, West Main Street remains closed between Raynor Avenue and Marcy Avenue as the investigation is still active and ongoing. According to the statement, preliminary information from the scene indicates that the victim was crossing Main Street from south to north. When he was standing in the middle of the roadway, police say, he was initially struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound and then by a second vehicle traveling westbound. The first vehicle, believed to be a small white SUV, did not stop at the scene and is believed to have driver’s side damage (mirror was recovered at the scene). The second vehicle remained at the scene following the collision.
