USGA Picks Thompson’s Art

Long Island native and artist Elaine Faith Thompson has been chosen by the United States Golf Association as one of several artists to paint a limited edition, fine art print commemorating the 2018 US Open Championship. The 118th US Open will take place at Shinnecock Hills from June 14 to 17.

An unveiling of the US Open paintings will take place on Sunday, April 29, at the Bellport Community Center at 3 PM. An artist reception, open to the public, will be held from 2 to 5 PM and refreshments will be served.

Thompson is known for her paintings of many of Long Island notable sights, including the Big Duck, Peconic River, and the Riverhead Raceway. She received the news in early December 2017 and said she “felt honored” to be commissioned do a painting of the golf course. In preparation, she spent the following two days photographing the Shinnecock’s golf course and clubhouse.

Thompson has worked on numerous paintings for USGA championships that took place on Long Island and in the New York metropolitan area. Her first golf painting was of Bethpage State Park’s Black Course for the 2002 US Open. She also worked with the USGA on posters for the 2004 US Open at Shinnecock Hills, the 2006 US Open at Winged Foot Golf Club, the 2009 US Open at Bethpage Black, and the 2013 US Women’s Open at Sebonack Golf Club.

Limited edition prints of this year’s art will be available.
